Investigating the Different Types of Dyes in Synthetic Foods

The students from our Integrated Science class used paper chromatography to investigate the various types of dyes found in synthetic foods. The goal of this class was for the students to separate the different colour dyes and calculate their retention factor.

The students were challenged to apply their understanding to investigate food colours and hyperactivity in children as they analyzed the chromatogram to identify certain dyes used in synthetic foods.
